FAQs

What are the main vital signs?

The main vital signs that are routinely monitored by healthcare professionals include the following:

  • Body temperature
  • Pulse rate
  • Breathing rate (respiration)
  • Blood pressure (Blood pressure is not always considered as one of the main vital signs, but is often measured alongside them.)

Why are vital signs important to measure?

Vital signs provide an indication of a hospital patient’s physiological state.

Vital signs are considered an essential part of monitoring patients in hospital; healthcare professionals need to measure vital signs to help to detect clinical deterioration early.

They should be measured consistently and recorded accurately.
